Job Description

AIMA, a global trade association representing the alternative investment management industry, seeks an experienced professional in its Washington, DC office to assist AIMA’s policy and regulation efforts in the USA.

About AIMA

AIMA is a trade association representing the global alternative investment management industry. Headquartered in London, AIMA services approximately 2,100 corporate members, in over 60 countries. AIMA is the leading industry advocate, maintaining close dialogue with national and supranational policy making institutions, governments and regulatory agencies, providing responses to important regulatory and tax consultations and developing sound practices and industry guidance for our members. 

AIMA has also established the Alternative Credit Council, which is an association within AIMA devoted to representing the private credit industry, with a view to securing sustainable development of the sector. It is the largest global trade association representing the interests of the private credit and non-bank finance participants in asset management.

The role

The successful candidate will help support AIMA’s policy, advocacy, implementation guidance and sound practice activity in the US, working both with member working groups and colleagues within the GRA Department. The candidate will support the efforts of working groups and peer groups and assist in the expansion of AIMA’s US membership base.

The position requires an experienced individual who operates with a high level of autonomy and initiative. The person will need to demonstrate familiarity with, and knowledge of, the US regulatory regime and set out AIMA's positioning on relevant topics clearly and accurately publicly and in private meetings. There is significant scope for the individual to grow and develop the role.

As well as having a solid knowledge of and experience in financial services regulation, the successful candidate will be able to display a working knowledge of how alternative funds operate on a day-to-day basis.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with AIMA’s US and global advocacy activity by engaging with the relevant agencies, policymakers and lawmakers, including updates for members or briefing notes for colleagues;
  • Assisting in the preparation of appropriate guidance and sound practices to aid members in understanding new regulatory requirements;
  • Research to support AIMA’s US regulatory responses;
  • Organising and running specialist working groups to handle specific projects and initiatives of interest to the membership;
  • Assisting/collaborating with colleagues from AIMA’s other departments to develop AIMA’s US presence;
  • Responding promptly to members’ queries and requests on policy and regulatory issues and implementation guidance;
  • Attending industry events and networking with members and industry participants; and 
  • Liaising with AIMA’s offices globally and with members acting locally in different jurisdictions and, when necessary, travelling in connection with the above work. 

Required skills and experience for this position include: 

  • Post-graduate experience - gained in house at an asset manager, government or regulatory agencies, or other appropriate experience in the asset management industry, a law firm, compliance consultancy or trade association (minimum one year);
  • The ability to absorb and organise substantial amounts of both general and detailed information and to disseminate and distil it in a manner readily accessible to AIMA members; 
  • Attention to detail, diligence, accuracy and thoroughness in the written and spoken word; 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English; 
  • Very good organisational and project management skills;
  • Excellent research skills; 
  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally with both government and industry representatives;
  • The ability to adapt to and fit in with AIMA culture including a willingness to tackle a broad range of issues and work enthusiastically within a small team; and
  • The ability to work under pressure and to represent AIMA professionally and positively, both internally and externally.

This is a full-time role (3 month probationary period) and includes an annual discretionary bonus and benefits.
