Job Description

Position Overview

The Director of Nursing (DON) oversees nursing operations, ensuring high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and effective staff management. This role includes leadership of Routine Nursing Services, Inpatient, Observation, Hospice, Swing Bed Services, and Emergency Department Services. The DON collaborates with executive leadership to develop policies and strategies aligned with the organization's mission.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Oversees daily operations of the hospital’s nursing department.
  • Develops and maintains a structured nursing program.
  • Provides mentorship and supervision to nursing staff.
  • Leads recruitment, retention, and professional development efforts.
  • Fosters a team-oriented culture and high morale.
  • Manages special projects as assigned.

Patient Care & Quality Assurance

  • Ensures consistent delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Works with interdisciplinary teams to improve outcomes.
  • Addresses patient concerns and monitors satisfaction.
  • Oversees infection control, medication administration, and best practices.
  • Leads quality improvement initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with healthcare regulations (CMS, OSHA, HIPAA).
  • Conducts audits to maintain adherence to standards.
  • Prepares for external audits and accreditation.

Policy & Procedure Development

  • Develops and updates policies to enhance nursing operations.
  • Ensures standards align with evidence-based practices.

Financial & Resource Management

  • Oversees the nursing department’s budget.
  • Manages staffing levels to meet patient needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages the nursing department, overseeing hiring, training, workflow management, performance assessment, and conflict resolution in compliance with policies.

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of nursing experience, including two years in leadership.
  • Knowledge of nursing practices and patient care management.
  • Experience with electronic health records preferred.
