Emphasizing the importance of growing and consuming nutritious food, as well as training individuals for careers in agriculture, this partnership d evelops practices that can be replicated throughout the city, tearing down silos that separate the school districts from the community and connecting nutrition education whereby children and the community engage in high value hands on learning.

Paid Farm Manager Internship Description

We are searching for a Farm Manager with good business sense to join our team. The Farm Manager’s responsibilities include monitoring staff, crops, purchasing supplies, preparing budgets and reports, and ensuring maximum profit. You should be able to maintain professional networks and stay up to date with developments in agricultural science. Hold or be able to attain Ohio Driver License. Work alongside the Go Columbus Agriculture board of Director, Farm Manager and Ohio State University Educator/Public Relations Interns. Host community volunteers with plan programming that is engaging and promotes the health and appearance of the Farm. Work with the staff to host school aged field trips and work based learning experiences.

To be successful as a Farm Manager, the successful candidate will be an outside the box thinker, detail-oriented while also keeping the bigger picture in mind. Outstanding candidates are keen problem solvers who are focused on efficiency and take a hands-on approach to management. The responsibilities of a Farm Manager includes performing physical labor, operating heavy machinery, and supervising farm workers. demonstrate a passion for the outdoors, knowledge of agricultural machinery, and physical stamina. Ultimately, a top-notch Farm Manager should possess physical strength, good hand-eye coordination, and a keen interest in agriculture.

Farm Manager Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing existing operations, crops, staff, and financial documents and recommending improvements.
  • Preparing plans and schedules for planting and harvesting and ensuring staff understands expectations.
  • Visiting the different divisions to inspect crops, livestock, and also perform tests on soil and water.
  • Ensuring seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other supplies are regularly restocked.
  • Scheduling repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and machinery.
  • Handling the marketing and sale of products produced on the farm like fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, and grain.
  • Ensuring all staff adheres to health and safety regulations.
  • Assisting with the recruitment and training of new staff members.
  • Collaborating with senior staff to prepare budgets and financial reports.
  • Building professional networks and keeping abreast of developments in agricultural science.
  • Performing manual labor.
  • Performing maintenance on the farm.
  • Handling heavy machinery.
  • Repairing faulty vehicles and machinery.
  • Managing farming activities.
  • Overseeing farmworkers.

Farm Manager Requirements:

  • Register Ohio State Student at least half time at time of applying and maintained throughout employment with a focus area of Bachelor’s or higher degree or equivalent in agriculture.
  • Additional courses in business management or administration are recommended.
  • Extensive experience in a farming-related field.
  • Management experience would be a plus.
  • A passion for agriculture.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • The ability to make decisions in stressful environments.
  • Superb communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience in the farming industry.
  • Knowledge of farming best practices.
  • Able to work long hours on location.
  • Must be physically fit enough to meet the high demands of the position.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Successfully pass Background Check
  • Have or be able to attain Commercial Pesticide Licence (CORE, HERB, PEST)
  • Have or be able to attain Ohio Driver License
  • Have or be able to attain OSHA 10 Certification
