Position Overview

This teacher reports to the Assistant Head of School for Academics and is a member of the Specialty Team. The music teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters students' appreciation and understanding of music. They will teach vocal and instrumental techniques, develop students' musical abilities, and enhance their skills in listening to and reading music. The teacher is expected to implement culturally responsive methods, promoting multicultural music appreciation and fostering a diverse, inclusive education environment.  Importantly, they must be adept at differentiating music instruction to accommodate students with diverse learning differences, ensuring all students can engage meaningfully with the curriculum. Additionally, they will support the school musical production and collaborate with faculty to enhance the school's performing arts program. This is a temporary full time position. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Teach Lower School music classes in an engaging, developmentally appropriate way. 
  • Teach electives to middle school students each quarter, including two quarters of musical theater elective and two music-related classes of your choosing. 
  • Create an inclusive classroom environment and develop meaningful relationships with all students. 
  • Support students’ social-emotional and academic development by communicating regularly with classroom teachers. 
  • Develop and support a curriculum that provides a balanced approach to music education, including singing, playing instrumental music, creative movement, and performance. 
  • Adjust and adapt curriculum based on students’ needs.
  • Evaluate student progress via report cards at the end of each quarter. 
  • Plan, rehearse, and direct students in annual school performances (winter program, talent show, graduation performance) in collaboration with the Movement teacher.
  • Work in collaboration with other Specialty Team members to support student needs and promote cross-curricular collaboration when possible.  
  • Serve as member of production staff for annual musical theater production, providing leadership and/or assistance in all phases of the production. 
  • Participate in other school-wide activities throughout the year, including division and faculty/staff meetings, and other events. 

Education, Certifications, and Work Related Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Musical skill competency, including the ability to sing and play multiple instruments 

Preferred

  • Valid teaching credential
  • Master’s Degree in Music or Education 
  • Experience with and understanding of children in grades 2-8 who learn differently
